Mixing Styles: How to Design Like a Pro

Hiring an interior decorator and designers is probably the best way to make your home fabulous. These are the people who have lots of experience and definitely know what they’re doing, and can thus turn your living space into something really amazing. However, is this really what you want? Or are you one of those people who like to stay involved and be creative with their own space? Not everything has to be perfect and in accordance with the latest trends and styles, and it’s quite all right to improvise a bit. You don’t even have to stick to just one style – instead, be eclectic and funky, and mix several styles into one. Here’s what you need to do.

Perfect example: boho and traditional

This is a mixture not that many people are going to enjoy at first, but once they look into it a bit, they’ll realize how amazing it actually is. Mixing boho with a touch of traditional style is the way to get the best of both worlds – the coziness and comfort of the former, as well as the patterns and colors of the latter.

Creating boho-inspired rooms today is easier than ever – especially when you’re decorating your bedroom – and all you need to do is find stylish materials that will help you relax and accentuate your bohemian style. Now combine that with traditional wall colors and furniture pieces, and you’ll end up with the most unique living space in the world!

Focal points matter

No matter what styles you opt for and how many you decide to put into the mix, it’s important to give your focal points enough attention. Whether it’s a piece of art, a fireplace, a particularly interesting chandelier or a wall-to-wall and floor-to-ceiling bookshelf, you have to show it love and explain to your guests why a particular piece is so important to you.

This could be rather hard to achieve when you’re combining several styles into one, but it’s still doable if you decorate the area around your focal point differently than the rest of the room. Having an ultra-modern character piece in a traditionally decorated living room, for instance, will immediately shift everyone’s attention to it, and your focal point will get a chance to stand out more than before.

Think about consistency

The number of styles you mix doesn’t matter – what matters is making them appear as one. It’s all about consistency and trying to blend all those different shapes, colors, patterns and styles together, making it appear like it’s always been that way.

One of the ways to achieve consistency throughout your home is by focusing on colors. Try to coordinate the color of your walls, your furniture, your décor, and your floors, and you’ll get a unified picture and make everything blend together. Combining the wall color with the color of your cozy cool rugs, for instance, is probably the best way to create a unifying effect in literally every part of your home, so think about this idea as soon as possible.

Equal distribution

This is another important thing when blending several styles – give each enough space. You can’t have a Scandinavian home with just one mid-century furniture piece and call this a combination of different decorating styles. Instead, introduce the same amount of elements from all the styles you want to mix together and distribute them equally.

First, think about the styles you want to incorporate and what you’d like to have in your home, and only then start planning the layout. Distribute the furniture and décor all over the place strategically and keep the big picture in mind. This way, you’ll accept the mixture you’ve created more easily and get used to it right away.

Keep it natural

Another way to blend different styles together is by paying attention to the material. No matter how many furniture pieces you mix together, they’ll form a unified picture if all of them feature natural and sustainable materials.

Upholstered, second-hand and repurposed furniture is quite popular today, especially with people who are interested in saving the environment and becoming eco-friendly. They’re discovering old pieces, saving them and giving them a new purpose, making this trend one of the most popular ones at the moment. The chances are it will remain popular in the future as well, and will surely be among the most inspiring interior design trends next year.

Although combining several trends into one might seem like the hardest thing in the world at first, it’s actually easier than most people think. You just have to get organized and define the effect you’re trying to achieve, and then keep the end result in your mind at all times. If you manage to do that, mixing different styles together like a professional is going to be the easiest thing you’ve ever done.
